The winter solstice calls us into the darkness and into ourselves. It also heralds the hope of the returning light. For many Christians around the world the birth of Jesus, and his lighting the world with his example of divine love, coincides with the return of the sun. We grew up with many of these traditional Christmas songs, and a deep fondness for this season of darkness and light. While there is joy apparent this time of year in the twinkle lights and kindling fires, it is also a time for meditation, for quiet, and for introspection.
